Authentic graduated, puka shell, necklace, i. beautiful, brown, cream and light pink tones
Barrel clasp
Vintage circa 1970s
This necklace hails from the late 1960s to 1970s and represents a time when hand-shaped shells were made into discs and strung in simple style. The piece is made of disc heishi of light pen or olive shell interspersed sporadically, dark clam shell heishi. The heishi discs are all hand cut--older stones that are increasingly hard to find. This Santo Domingo piece would be great for a young woman, or anyone with a slender neck.
The choker measures just over 18” long tip to tip. The heishi discs are graduated and start at 3/8 in diameter at the bottom and closer to 1/8 at the top. Several of the discs have small divots, either originally had cavities from mother stone or matrix, or possibly dinged over time.
Beautiful older piece, a vanishing treasure.
